Grupo Éxito traces its origins to a Medellín, Colombia family run textile business founded in 1949 by Gustavo Toro Quintero. The business was named after the Spanish word for success (Éxito). In 1972 it transitioned into a hypermarket when it added supermarket products and in 1974 it began adding more locations (six years before the largest location was opened in Bogotá, Colombia). In 1994 when there were four major locations, it went public on the Medellín and Bogotá stock exchanges but it didn't become a leading retailer until 1998. By then the company had further diversified its business, offering services related to eye care and travel.

The beginning of the 21st century was marked by an acquisitions spree starting with an 80% interest in Venezuelan hypermarket operator Cativen (much of the funds used were raised in the late 1990s when it sold 25% of the company to French group Casino and attracted investment from JP Morgan).^[6] By year end 2010 Groupe Casino owned 53.89% of Almacenes Éxito (down from 67% in September).

  ON A MID-SEPTEMBER night, Ezekiel Rubalcada swaggers through the doors of Las Vegas' M Resort Spa Casino. He moves to the half-moon-shaped bar overlooking the sportsbook, catching up with old friends. He exchanges high-fives and playful F-bombs with a couple of bartenders, then makes a raunchy pass at a brunette waitress who escapes in a near sprint.

  For 38-year-old Rubalcada, being at the M is a pleasing trip down memory lane, a visit to his primary workplace throughout 2010 and 2011. Back then, he had nearly $1 million in his account at the M. Dressed in slacks and a sport coat, he would saunter in and bet six figures a week on NFL and college games. He was, M Resort staffers say, one of the sportsbook's 'bigger guys' -- a high roller who could afford to bet very, very big.

  But he wasn't that at all.

  In fact, Rubalcada was a faceless grunt in the most successful gambling enterprise of all time. The divorced father of two says he was paid $1,200 a week by an outfit called ACME Group Trading to sip vodka tonics or Bud Lights until a man he'd never met called or texted him on his small Nokia phone. The voice would tell Rubalcada, known as Lubbock, how many thousands of dollars to place on which games -- immediately. But the ultimate orders came from the greatest and most controversial sports gambler ever: William T. 'Billy' Walters.

  For almost four decades, Walters, now 68, is thought to have bet more money more successfully than anyone in history, earning hundreds of millions of dollars. Werewolf slot games free online. His talent brought him from a life of poverty in rural Kentucky to one of wild success. He owns a fleet of car dealerships, several high-end golf courses, a private jet and fabulous homes in places like Palm Desert and Cabo San Lucas.

  Walters, according to interviews, is both kind and a bully, charming and scheming. He maintains an opulent lifestyle but also gives lavishly to charity as well as to presidents, governors and city council members. Among everyone who knows him -- from employees to bookmakers to politicians and investigators -- he elicits admiration, fear, jealousy and consternation in nearly equal measures.

  WALTERS DOESN'T WANT to talk much about any of it. Over a period of several months, he begs off numerous interview requests from ESPN, saying his lawyers want him to keep quiet because of the latest investigation against him. Last spring his name appeared in headlines next to those of pro golfer Phil Mickelson -- a friend and occasional golf partner -- and billionaire investor Carl Icahn as targets of a federal insider-trading investigation. Walters has denied wrongdoing, but the case remains open.

  In one phone call, he rails about his distrust of the media. Another call ends with a referral to his attorney. In late January, he answers a few questions and agrees to a fuller interview if ESPN agrees not to ask him about the insider-trading case or write about allegations that he once provided information to an FBI agent. ESPN declines the offer.

  Walters repeatedly voices frustration over what he says are draconian laws that drive a massive market of betting dollars to poorly regulated offshore locales. 'Why don't we license this thing?' Walters says. 'Why don't we regulate it? Why don't we keep the bad guys out? Why don't we generate some jobs?

  'Everybody in this country bets on sports,' he continues. 'If you were to take away the office pools, fantasy pools, people betting on sports, I guarantee the [TV] viewership would be cut in less than half.'

  Even when there isn't an FBI investigation looming, Walters isn't willing to talk much about his work. One of the few times he got close -- in a fawning 60 Minutes profile in 2011 -- he spoke only in general terms. He's been more open about his background: He was born to a poor teenage mother in southern Kentucky and raised primarily by his grandmother until she died when Billy was 12. He started placing bets as a young boy and lost all his savings -- $75 -- betting on the New York Yankees against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the '55 World Series. In the early 1980s, he left two failed marriages and a car salesman gig behind in Kentucky and, after a misdemeanor gambling conviction, headed west with a tiny bank account and a heavy drinking habit.

  After arriving in Vegas, Walters connected with the people who would help him turn his gambling habit into a career. In 1980, Dr. Ivan Mindlin and Michael Kent had formed the now-legendary Computer Group, which pioneered the use of computer algorithms for sports betting. Mindlin was the self-indulgent frontman, a surgeon-turned-gambler. The technology was run by Kent, a mathematician who developed nuclear submarine technology. By the early '80s, the Computer Group had burgeoned into the first national network of sports bettors, betting hundreds of thousands a day. The collective's gamblers, handicappers and investors began earning millions.

  Walters was inexperienced, but Mindlin was impressed with his moxie and recommended his hiring to Kent in 1983. Walters was tasked with exploiting the weakest betting lines with bookies, then eventually with moving millions every week in exchange for a cut of the profits. 'I gave birth to him,' Mindlin says.

  After a few years, Walters quit drinking for good and morphed into a member of Las Vegas' influential elite, developing golf courses, subdivisions and industrial parks. According to Jack Sheehan, a longtime Vegas pal, Walters fancies himself an across-the-board genius whose business acumen stretches far beyond betting. He prefers being seen as a successful entrepreneur, the friend says, not just a 'Las Vegas gambler.' Walters says sports betting now occupies less than 7 percent of his time.

    They have plenty of parking places but they would not let me park my truck camper and asked me to leave their parking lot.. It's a small unit and only takes a regular parking spot.

    Parking on Large gravel lot on south side next to John Daly Blvd. @ Falls St.. You Can take exit 21 off I-190 north bound, just go straight to Buffalo Ave., turn left at light and take another quick left back on to Robert Moses Pkwy. -- this bypasses the low underpass when making the 'loop' exit off I-190. Full service casino with table games. Walking distance to Niagara Falls State Park. Lots of restaurants in area. Stayed several days and enjoyed the casino and area. Did not see much 'security' in parking lot but felt safe inside fenced casino area.

    An update on the Seneca Niagara Casino and Hotel
    We are staying here tonight, 9/24/2009. Our printed directory, Jane Kenny's excellent 'Casino Camping - Guide to RV-Friendly Casinos - 4th Edition' indicated parking was available here and provided directions.
    Those directions included getting off US-190 North at exit 21 onto the Robert Moses Parkway. Signs indicated that the road was closed to commercial traffic, but there were no height warnings, until we were already well committed on a corkscrew ramp, where a sign warned of 12'0' clearance.. We stopped on the shoulder and called the State Police for help. When the officer arrived, he asked how tall our rig was -- 13'0' -- and informed us that we would clear the overpass if we stayed in the left lane, and that semi-trailers routinely clear it at 13'6'. He did a traffic block behind us and we did clear the overpass with inches to spare. Bottom line, it is no problem for rigs 13' or under, just stay left.
    Kenny states the RV parking is in the self-park lot off Falls Street, however this is out of date, The casino now wants RVs to park in the oversize lot, normally used by tour buses, at the northeast corner of the property. Access is from Niagara Street at the corner of John B. Day. Here is the Google Maps view:

    On May 4, 2007 we went to Seneca Casino in Niagara Falls, New York. Although the security guard said that it was okay to park your RV in the back parking lot near the back fence, I wouldn't trust it. There was not enough room and it didn't look too safe to me.

    The Knowbody Else[edit]

    Black Oak Arkansas, originally named 'The Knowbody Else,' was formed in 1963 by some 'high school pals' living in the area around Black Oak, Arkansas.^[1] Original members included Ronnie 'Chicky Hawk' Smith (vocals), Rickie Lee (alternately 'Risky' or 'Ricochet') Reynolds (guitar), Stanley 'Goober Grin' Knight (guitar), Harvey 'Burley' Jett (guitar), Pat 'Dirty' Daugherty (bass), and Wayne 'Squeezebox' Evans (drums).^[2] At some point the band and Ronnie 'Chicky Hawk' Smith agreed that a mutual friend named James 'Jim Dandy' Mangrum would make a better front man, while Smith agreed that he himself would make a better stage production manager.

    The band's first PA system was stolen from Monette High School. The group then cleaned out an old galvanized grain bin on the edge of town and began blasting out ear-piercing sounds that echoed their special blend of music that came from rock, gospel, country and blues influences. Members of the group were subsequently charged in absentia with grand larceny and sentenced to 26 years at the Tucker Prison Farm, a sentence that was later suspended. This led to their retreat to the hills of rural north-central Arkansas where they lived off the land and refined their musical style.^[3] They also lived in Long Beach, Mississippi, and played at the local Lobe theater/dance hall and the short-lived venue, 'The Black Rainbow.' Some of their influences during this time were the Beatles and the Byrds.

    The Knowbody Else moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1969 and signed a record deal with Stax Records. Their self-titled debut album (Hip Records #HIS-7003 [a subsidiary of Stax]) was largely ignored by the public.^[2] During this time the band became interested in psychedelia and Easternspiritualism which, combined with their Southern Baptist upbringing, contributed to their sound.

    After several trips to Los Angeles, California, in 1970, the band was signed by Atco Records (whose parent label Atlantic Records once had a partnership with Stax) and rechristened 'Black Oak Arkansas'.^[2] Their self-titled debut album Black Oak Arkansas was released in 1971.^[2] The record featured enduring BOA classics such ase 'Hot And Nasty', 'Lord Have Mercy On My Soul', 'Uncle Lijiah' (written in pseudo-tribute to Harvey Jett's real-life great uncle) and 'When Electricity Came To Arkansas', which was accused by fundamentalist religious groups of containing backward-masked 'Satanic messages' (possibly from a live performance of the song in which Mangrum utters 'dog si eh' and 'natas' three times). The band toured extensively, gaining a reputation as a premier live act throughout the early 1970s all across America, and later even in Europe. Keep the Faith followed in 1972, featuring the manic concert staple 'Fever In My Mind'. Drummer Wayne Evans left the band and was replaced by journeyman skinsman Tommy Aldridge on BOA's next release If an Angel Came to See You, Would You Make Her Feel at Home?,^[2] which featured another enduring BOA concert favorite, 'Mutants Of The Monster' and expanded on the group's eclectic musical style.

    In 1973, Black Oak Arkansas released their fourth LP Raunch 'N' Roll Live, and took the rather unorthodox tack of including previously unreleased new songs on their first live concert album like 'Gigolo', 'Gettin' Kinda Cocky', as well as two more BOA classics: 'Hot Rod', which features Dandy's sly double-entendre lyrics, and 'Up', which spotlights Aldridge's marathon drum solo, a portion of which he played with his bare hands. The four new songs were originally recorded and intended to be included on the follow-up studio album to If an Angel Came to See You.., but when Atco Records realized the band's true strong suit was their concert act, the live album resulted. Raunch 'N' Roll Live was re-issued in 2007 by Rhino Records as a 2-CD set containing both concerts that the original vinyl album was culled from. The band's fifth album, High on the Hog, also released in 1973, ended up being the high point of BOA's career, peaking at number 52 on the Billboard albums chart.^[2]Ruby Starr (future vocalist of Grey Ghost) also toured intermittently with Black Oak during this period, and her raspy voice can be heard on the group's remake of LaVern Baker's 1957 hit 'Jim Dandy (To The Rescue)', which reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.^[2] Baker's song was recorded at the suggestion of Elvis Presley, when he invited BOA to Graceland.

    The band was riding high on the concert trail as well by this time, headlining large venues like Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium and Charlotte Motor Speedway, and the Royal Albert Hall in London, England. Black Oak Arkansas also played at the California Jam festival in Ontario, California on April 6, 1974. The concert attracted over 200,000 fans, and BOA appeared alongside Black Sabbath, Eagles, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Deep Purple, Earth, Wind & Fire, Seals and Crofts and Rare Earth, and portions of the show were telecast on ABC Television in the US, exposing the band to a wider audience.

    The follow-up to High On The Hog, 1974's, Street Party (featuring 'Son Of A Gun', 'Hey Ya'll' and 'Dixie', as well as a cover of the Motown classic 'Dancing In The Street'), may have failed to maintain the momentum, but another 1974 release entitled Early Times, a shelved Stax recording by 'The Knowbody Else' (now released on the back of their success and under the BOA banner), made up for lost time. Guitarist Harvey Jett left the band after Street Party and was replaced by Jimmy 'Soybean' Henderson in 1975 and he debuted on the band's final studio album for Atco Records, Ain't Life Grand. This album included a snarly remake of George Harrison's Beatles classic 'Taxman', as well as new originals like 'Fancy Nancy', 'Rebel', 'Good Stuff', 'Cryin' Shame' and 'Let Life Be Good To You'. The band signed a contract with MCA and promptly released X-Rated later in 1975, which marked the beginning of Black Oak Arkansas' decline. In 1976, they released two fairly nondescript and unsuccessful albums for MCA, Balls of Fire and 10 Yr Overnight Success, the latter of which as a five-piece band with the departure of Rickie Reynolds, who was more or less replaced on tour by keyboardist Marius Penczner during this period.
